POSITION SUMMARY:

The Staff Accountant is responsible for modeling the 3 Company values of Compassion, Integrity, and Excellence, and for promoting the Hospice Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of success as the foundation. S/he is responsible for upholding the Code of Ethical Conduct and for promoting positive

working relationships within the Company, among all departments, and all external stakeholders.

Working with a relatively high level of supervision, this position performs basic analytical assignments and

prepares accounting related reports, working as an Individual Contributor or as part of a team. Majority of

the functions will be to assist more senior level accounting professionals with the tax and treasury monthly,

quarterly and year end close. This position will also support the company’s efforts to comply with the

requirements of Sarbanes Oxley. S/he is responsible for applying the rules and regulations of state and

federal tax and regulatory agencies and other certified agencies.

o Prepares and analyzes journal entries; proposes adjustments as necessary.

o Assists with the preparation of the income tax provision, income tax returns and general ledger

account reconciliations.

o Compares accounting system outputs with daily input verifying for accuracy and resolves

discrepancies.

o Maintains records of routine tax and accounting transactions.

o Assists in the documentation of simple tax, treasury and accounting projects under direct

supervision.

o Researches various tax and accounting issues and develops plans to address concerns and

opportunities.

o Assists in the analysis and interpretation of accounting records for use by management, as

required.

o Assists in preparation of financial and operating reports including trial balances, adjustments and

closing entries.

o Prepares schedules with supporting documentation to external auditors.

o Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each

o General understanding of Tax and Accounting processes.

o Basic knowledge of tax and financial systems (e.g., Tax Preparation Software, Tax Research Tools,

RIA/CCH, General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets, Financial Reporting tools).

o Understanding of taxation – Primarily federal and state income taxation, sales & use tax desired but

not required.

o General understanding of normal treasury and cash management operations.

o General knowledge of GAAP requirements, especially ASC 740.

o General knowledge of tax compliance, internal controls and auditing.

o Demonstrated analytical, research and problem solving skills.

o Strong organizational and time management skills.

o Excellent customer service skills.

o Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently. Strong written and verbal communications. Ability to

o Must be able to travel occasionally.

o Ability to maintain confidentiality of information, such as patient and Company files.

Education and/or Experience

• 4-year college degree with a major in accounting.

• Masters degree with a concentration accounting or taxation preferred.

• 1 – 2 years of related experience and/or training.

• Understanding and experience with bank reconciliation functions, posting journal entries, and month

end processing.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially in Excel; attention to detail; strong written and oral

communications skills.

• Great Plains and SAGE software experience a plus.

• Demonstrated experience in continuous improvement initiatives, root cause analysis and project

management.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in Accounting software; Internet software,

accounting information systems and Microsoft Office software, especially Excel. Experience with MAS 90

and FAS fixed asset software is preferred.

Other Qualifications

Strong knowledge of GAAP. Maintains a professional demeanor and appearance. Is self-motivated,

dependable and detailed oriented. Must be of high integrity, including maintenance of confidential

information.

Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

CPA or CPA candidate required.

Other Skills and Abilities

Excellent communication skills with strong organizational and problem solving abilities. Ability to

understand, read, write and speak English.
