POSITION SUMMARY:

The Staff Accountant is responsible for modeling the 3 Company values of Compassion, Integrity, and Excellence, and for promoting the Hospice Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of success as the foundation. S/he is responsible for upholding the Code of Ethical Conduct and for promoting positive working relationships within the Company, among all departments, and all external stakeholders.

Working with a relatively high level of supervision, this position performs basic analytical assignments and prepares accounting related reports, working as an Individual Contributor or as part of a team. Majority of the functions will be to assist more senior level accounting professionals with the monthly, quarterly and year end close. This position will also support the company’s efforts to comply with the requirements of Sarbanes Oxley.  S/he is responsible for applying the rules and regulations of state and federal regulatory agencies and other certified agencies.

  • Position-specific Responsibilities
  • Prepares and analyzes journal entries; proposes adjustments as necessary.
  • Assists with the preparation of general ledger account reconciliations
  • Compares accounting system outputs with daily input verifying for accuracy and resolves discrepancies.
  • Maintains records of routine accounting transactions.
  • Assists in the documentation of simple accounting projects under direct supervision.
  • Assists in the analysis and interpretation of accounting records for use by management, as required.
  • Assists in preparation of financial and operating reports including trial balances, adjustments and closing entries.
  • Prepares schedules with supporting documentation to external auditors
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Basic understanding of Accounting processes
  • Basic knowledge of financial systems (e.g., General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets, Financial Reporting tools)
  • Understanding of taxation – income, sales & use tax desired but not required
  • General knowledge of GAAP requirements
  • General knowledge of internal controls, compliance and auditing
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently. Strong written and verbal communications.  Ability to document as required by regulations.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from Leaders, and Colleagues.
  • Ability to define problems, understand and collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in a variety of forms and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, to include some evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able to travel.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information, such as patient and Company files.

Education and/or Experience

  • 4-year college degree with a major in business, finance or accounting
  • 1 – 2 years of related experience and/or training
  • Understanding and experience with bank reconciliation functions, posting journal entries, and month end processing are required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially in Excel; attention to detail; strong written and oral communications skills.
  • SAGE software experience a plus
  • Demonstrated experience in continuous improvement initiatives, root cause analysis and project management

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in Accounting software; Internet software, accounting information systems and Microsoft Office software, especially Excel.  Experience with MAS 90 and FAS fixed asset software is preferred.  


Other Qualifications

Strong knowledge of GAAP. Maintains a professional demeanor and appearance. Is self-motivated, dependable and detailed oriented.  Must be high integrity, including maintenance of confidential information.
